What do you get when you cross a gang of junior mafia members, a pair of psychotic serial killers, a bunch of twenty-something stoner dudes, and a slacker hero who witnessed his parents' murders as a young child and vows revenge upon the killer? You get "BLANK," the new indie "psycho-thriller" movie written and directed by Rick L. Winters and filmed entirely in the Pacific Northwest. I was honored to attend the "BLANK" world premiere last month at the Admiral Bay Theatre in West Seattle and I can attest that although the movie moves a bit slow at times and the "surprise twist" at the end has been done before, the flick was still weird and twisted enough to be entertaining and is destined to become an underground cult favorite. The highlight of the movie – at least for me – was in a motel room scene about an hour and fifteen minutes into the flick, in which the serial killer couple (a psycho hillbilly complete with gold tooth and his twisted girl friend who has a stabbing fetish) have just completed a grisly deed on a couple of not-so-innocent victims and are engaging in small talk. Behind the psycho hillbilly is a TV set playing a rock video, and yes, it's none other than Paul Ace Diamond "Huggy" Blow singing and dancing on the screen behind the psychopath as he banters with his weird-ass girlfriend. "BLANK" the movie is headed next to the Sundance film festival where I'm sure it will win many awards including "best singing and dancing by an extra" and after that you can probably catch it on the big screen in avant garde theatres around town or at least on DVD at your local Blockbuster. Stay tuned for more info...
In other news, a brand new book, The Band Name Book by Canadian musician-turned-author Noel Hudson, has just been published and it explains how (or where) "the best-named bands in history" got their names complete with CD cover and poster art, trivia, and other entertaining tidbits. Famous bands such as Devo, Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Depoche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails are featured in the book right along side lesser known bands including Seattle's own SPACE CRETINS and STEAMING WOLF PENIS who are both representin' the Pacific Northwest in the book. The colorful, highly-entertaining book logs in at over 300 pages and hopefully it will become a big seller and help promote indie rock music. The Band Name Book is available now on Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and elsewhere. Watch for it!
And finally, in case you haven't heard, a couple of local hard rock bands (Jupiter Crash and the Spittin' Cobras) received enough online votes to make it into the top-30 finals of the Motley Crue/Guitar Center "make band history" contest in which the winning band will open up for the Crue on their next tour and also get a chance to be "tea-bagged" by Tommy Lee. Over 8,000 unsigned, unknown bands submitted entries to the contest but my sources tell me that the ultimate winner will be a band whose members "iron each others hair backstage before shows." You have been warned!
