Where to Find Us

written by Gail Force! - photos by RJB photo

When you hear the band name Super Geek League, what first pops into mind? If you are one of those who have seen them play live or just heard their music, I’m sure there are many different images and sounds that dance around in your head. We’ll get to that later. But if you don’t yet know what they’re about, the thought process can be confusing. I know when I first heard of the band I really didn’t know what to think. Was it all some sort of nerdy, geek theme? Was it like the “large guy named tiny” perspective, purposefully offsetting a bad-ass heavy factor? The fact that their newest album is called “Peppermint Rainbows” adds even more to the baffling effect. But I can say that all the questions and assumptions one may have are addressed and answered in the live show.

The ones behind the music are Floyd McFeely the Commander of Tomorrow, Mick a.k.a. Sir Chalice, Vy Agra, Knuckles, P-word, Gil Chowder, Evad, and Barry McCockner. They are the creatures from space that drive the melodies into your ears wet-willie style, always striving for the ultimate recreation of the listener by adding their many different influences. The product we get to hear is a hodge-podge in the realm of “genre.” All the songs are distinctive and run the gamut from gritty punk, to funk, to epic, emotion-evoking rock. Rawk, if you will. All galvanized by the other-worldly sounding Theremin (very important)!

Of course, one quickly finds out when listening that the music is the engine under the hood of the whole operation. Just as in an actual space launch, there are many components that go into taking the SGL show into hyper-speed. Over the hills and far away, human G-nomes are hard at work constructing, tinkering, and storming each other’s brains. Right now, as we think the level-headed Dr. Schizoplex is building creatures and robots, dwarves are contemplating, and lovely ladies are shopping for whip cream! All for the audience’s elation at the show! Yes, there is an amazing production staff and a core cast of performers with rotating characters, so there’s always something new and exciting! The elusive Floyd McFeely describes his mission toward the show as, “a sonic assault of frenetic energy; pounding the audience into a primordial ooze.” My translation of that, and what I get from the show is that you can go and feel like a kid again! Become enveloped in shiny confetti (of the 80 pounds used, you will find at least half a pound in your underwear when you get home, I promise), feel free to laugh at the absurd things happening on stage and dance with reckless abandon. Come on now, who doesn’t appreciate seeing a whole band and performance artists who WANT to be right where they are all at once?

Fun is back in a big way and losing yourself is becoming more popular by the day! So do your tightened-up, over-worked self a favor and discover the release that is brought by the live show. You can check concert dates and many other fun wing-dings on their web site, www.supergeekleague.com. Also at www.myspace.com/supergeekleague. The music itself is also available on iTunes! If you don’t catch them in Seattle, you can also track them down on their regional summer tour; consisting of dates in Tahoe, Portland, Boise, and more, T.B.A.
