BUTCHER'S BLOCK

interrogated by Maija - Answers by Gelal
Dear reader,
This month I present to you an interview with Gelal of the ballsy, hell-bent and infamous U.S. Black Metal band: GRAND BELIAL’S KEY. I trust that if you are a reader of my column, you should be familiar with this horde, so they need little introduction. If you are scratching your head with “who....?” confusion, you should seriously consider beefing up your Black Metal collection. GBK has been one of my personal favorites (in the top 5 for sure) for years, ever since my fella played the “Goat Of a Thousand Young” demo for me, nearly a decade ago. It was a real treat to have the chance to interview Mr. Gelal.
Happy reading!
GRAND BELIAL’S KEY is infamous for attacking Judeo-christianity (the root of all modern day Christianity that suppresses the Sinner in all of us). Why is that 10,001 Black Metal bands can attack Christianity and it’s hardly a big deal. But when one attacks Judeo-christianity, they are vehemently and ruthlessly attacked by liberals?
I find it ridiculous for many years now the ‘underground’ will turn a blind eye or tolerate bands who openly express Satanic, nihilistic and perverted views, sing about bestiality, drug abuse and the murder of Christians, and follow like sheep without question, yet will go out of the way to try and clean their guilt by acting offended by anything remotely fascist, anti-Juden or national socialist. Where do you draw the line and what makes one better than the other? It’s acceptable to burn a church and kill a priest, but we must leave the synagogues and rabbis in peace?? I don’t accept this. And this is what black ‘glam rock’ metal and the death metal FUNderground has become today.
Do you ever feel as though the underground had turned its back on you?
I think it has but we’ve turned our backs to it as well. Stupid faggots today will pay up to $100 greenbacks on ebay to buy an original copy of MOCKING THE PHILANTHROPIST even though those CD’s sat in Wood-Nymph’s owner’s room for over 2 years collecting dust because no one would distribute them. Go figure...
Over the years you (meaning G.B.K.) have been a real target for finger-pointing (and boycotting). Due to your reputation, most of your last tour over in Europe was cancelled, not by you, but the venues. Do you think they may have overreacted?
Certainly. When we were scheduled to play Ireland in 2006, there were various articles written about our band in newspapers and internet sites claiming that we had some sort of connection to the LOVE ULSTER parade scheduled for the day following the gig. We somehow got linked up with the IRA and pro-LOYALISTS battle in Ireland (both Christian). The next day there was a riot in Dublin. We never even got into the plane to Ireland and flew to Denmark instead (our Danish show was also canceled). The night we arrived at our point of destination outside of Copenhagen, GBK’s gig cancellation was a story on Danish TV prime time news. Now, this is definitely an overreaction.
You must have been shocked to see that you had made prime time news in Denmark! Do you think there is such a thing as ‘bad publicity’?
It is when occurrences like those hinder your ability to play any gigs at all.
Natchtmystium were supposed to be on that tour. But I understand they backed out when shit started hitting the fan. Did they give you a (good) reason for their sudden change of mind? And do you think ‘comradeship’ is a thing of the past?
Nachtmystium backed out of the tour with multiple reasons and peppered with cowardice. This naturally occurs when one’s convictions are insincere, plastic, and engulfed in black ‘glam rock’ metal stardom. Fence sitters have to pay for respect since they cannot attain it with courage. Blake is definitely top of the line when it comes to being a diva. Out of all the gibberish this band has been involved with, nothing is more comical than their music, though.
I’m actually ashamed both my labels (Drakkar and Moribund) offered this guy a record deal. Then again, I don’t doubt the other bands on either roster are much different.
Everyone it seems looks back on the good old simplistic days and tells of how great and different the scene was X amount of years ago. Do you think cowardice and p.c. standpoints are more common nowadays then when G.B.K. first set its roots?
I think both extremes are more common nowadays as well as more evident. When we started there was no right-wing pagan oriented scene playing metal, just a few bands here and there such as Korrozia Metalla (USSR), Arghoslent, Rahowa, Disgust (USA), Vaginal Jesus, Veles, Funeral (Ex-kristallnacht), Evil (Brazil), Squadron (UK), Martial & Anti-semitex (Poland), and a lot of them were more pagan/anti-Christian in origin. Nevertheless, in the early 90’s there seemed to be less attention paid to utterly extreme bands or they were not very prominent in the minds of the general underground populace.
Nowadays, with the advent of the internet, and with the death of the punk/hardcore kids that sold themselves to modern metal, there appears to be a wave of Politically Correct babies across the world. I still think that people haven’t become more P.C., rather the non-P.C.; have become more visible and organized. It is still mind boggling to me that a P.C. movement would even exist amidst the gore, satanic, perverted, death glorifying, anti-human metal underground to begin with. I mean, the underground branched off as protest to the glam rock hysteria and selling out of speed/thrash bands. Eventually, the same underground sold out to Yiddish claws and metal-friendship etiquette.
Bands have called it quits over a lot less than what G.B.K. has been through. Some people would find it very hard to not back down when controversy knocks on their door. The classic G.B.K. retort to those who finger-point is the slogan “No boycott can stop us”. But have you ever doubted the band’s future or just wanted to walk away from it all?
All I can say is that partaking on this venture was a mistake that ruined my life. I should have concentrated on playing soccer, or obtaining a master’s in History, but at this point I may as well continue as long as I possess genuine hatred and inspiration. I’ve seen the worst in people, seen the betrayal of comrades, and the self-destruction of junkies. When our last note is played it will be because we chose to, not due to the fanatical obsession of the left wingers.
When you think about GBK’s history so far, what would you say is the pinnacle? Was there a moment when you thought it couldn’t get any better or worse?
Our pinnacles lived side by side by our tragedies so the higher we were the worst it was. We’ve been targeted countless times, boycotts of our CD’s by kike organizations such as Rough Trade Di$tribution, Hammerheart Record$, The Baroeg (club in Holland), Inertia Concert$ (Toronto), magazine$, label$, leftist$, homosexual$, communist$, misanthropes, hippie$, che Guevara gays, black metal posers, etc… We’ve had entire tours cancelled, individual shows cancelled in England, Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Austria, Canada, USA, France, etc…
The funny thing about all this is that the people who censor us act like the real fascists by working against freedom of expression and individual thought. I’m sure Drakkar Productions and Moribund Cult both experienced repercussions of being guilty by association as well.
You’ve been through your share of vocalists. But it seems no matter what vocalist or vocal style you go with, GBK ALWAYS sounds like GBK. When Cazz left, I think some people were kind of skeptical. So, now that “Kosherat” has been out for some time, what has the reaction been like?
There are always those that are traditionalists and prefer Cazz, and there are those that still prefer Lord Fag. I partly agree with such commentary because I myself don’t like bands changing members often. Nevertheless, I think our move was for the better and each album was tighter and live we were stronger. People just like to talk shit no matter what you do such as those bitching about our new songs sounding different than older ones when the reality is that 5 songs on KOSHERAT were written during or before JUDEOBEAST (7”ep songs).
Your late vocalist’s death came as shock to a lot of people. What was the cause of his untimely death and is there anything you would like to say about it?
Spontaneous human combustion.
All GRAND BELIAL’S KEY fans are on the edge of their seats. With the loss of your vocalist, is there still a future for the mighty GBK?
Grimnir was a heavy metal outlaw, period. He was part of our crew within the band and furthermore. His memory cannot be replaced with the arrival of any other individual. Everyone who knew Grimnir knows exactly what I’m referring to.
I’ve stated that we had no intention of looking for a replacement at the moment. GBK was a very tight unit up until Grimnir’s death. He was our third singer in the span of 14 years, and we were content with his performance, his dedication, and his willingness to stand along our side in the face of opposition.
If we do decide to stop GBK, it will be partly because of Grimnir, but also because we’ve done everything musically and lyrically that could be expected of a band. This third album may finish the job and hence there may not be a need for a fourth album at all. It is the culmination of a decade-long attack on the root of the enfeeblement of man. What more can I say about the dirty yids and the bastard son of Nazarene???
What do you think is the biggest misconception about you?
There are many misconceptions about all of us. You might as well ask the tooth fairy for rumors about GBK. Any website other than our own is not a source of correct information. Just because some hebe honker writes a few words about us, even though he’s never interviewed us or met us personally, doesn’t mean it is true. Sometimes I wonder if this is the underground or Hollywood with so many fucking rumors here and there.
There’s a point to everything we do. So, when you break it down, what is the point of GBK? Are you out to corrupt the world or is this all just a side effect from the desire to create something?
I have no idea. It was my intent from the beginning to create something original and unique. At that time there were too many clown bands around, all sounding identical to each other, and looking like each other as well. My goal was to have anyone identify the band as G.B.K. from the moment the first note was heard. It was important for me to do an expose of the nauseating root of Christianity which is Judaism, the Torah, the Old Testament, pre-monotheistic Yiddish culture and its sickening tribal origins.
For me, lyrics are extremely important. I find it strange and foreign seeing people, and sooo many people at that, taking no interest at all in what the band they are listening to is trying to say. I often hear the line “as long as the music’s good, I don’t care what they’re singing about”. Is there anything you would want to say to those ‘funergrounders’ who not only buy but listen to your records but would personally (in an actual word debate for example) disagree with everything being sung?
I definitely understand where you’re coming from. Many people sometimes write to us to compliment our music but do it with some sort of a disclaimer such as “even though I don’t like what you represent”, or “even though I am %100 opposed to your views on Judaism”, blah, blah, blah. I always explain that one goes intrinsically with the other and the separation of the two does not generally work. However, I can also understand how one can listen and be a fan of a band without fully supporting or even opposing its message (i.e.; Minor Threat, Nausea (Ny), Impaled Nazarene, King Diamond, Watain (Good Mates), Gg Allin & The Murder Junkies.
I have to ask about religion. First off, what would you consider yourself (a Satanist, Atheist, Devil worshipper, etc.)? And I hate to throw such a broad question at you but what are your thoughts on religion as a whole?
It is a broad question and quite a personal one for many people. I know we disagree on this and the same goes with ODIN, but I’m closer to an atheist than anything else and always have been. I was never attracted nor interested in Laveyan Satanism even though I’ve studied it along with all my other spiritual research throughout the years. I’ve had conflicts of adverse ideology with other members of GBK, most notably with the effeminate Lord Fag Pussyferian and his wizardly antics. Perhaps some people have misconstrued our band as a satanic one ala Morbid Angel or Deicide due to our blatantly and utterly defamation of all celesial doctrines. But opposition to the heresy of the semetic tribes does not mean acceptance of a Satanic entity. I personally do not see the logic in denying the existence of God yet accepting the existence of the Devil, if I make my point. I will also not contradict myself and say I believe in Zeus, Athena, Jupiter, or Heimdall even though I revere them as a connection to man’s history, civilization, and symbol of European grandeur.
I most humbly and sincerely thank you for your time and giving Seattle’s readers a taste of truth! We are at the ‘money- shot’ question: your last words?
The Star of David and the Pentagram go hand in hand like black metal and a camera.
