Raising Hell with Guitar Doug
The Pleasure Elite Unmasked

interview by Guitar Doug - photo by Mike Rhine

THE PLEASURE ELITE is a Seattle Rock band that has recorded and toured extensively across America and Europe. After a long Hiatus, the Pleasure Elite has reformed and has recorded a brand new album. The band is heading back to the concert stage for several shows beginning October 5th.

The dates for the Pleasure Elite shows now confirmed are October 5th at Jimmy Z’s in Everett with Toe Tag, The Halloween Show at Hell’s Kitchen on October 27th in Tacoma with Church of Hate, Silver and Lektor, and El Corazon on November 17th. The other bands for the November 17th show have not yet been announced. And more Pleasure Elite shows have yet to be announced.

The current line-up of The Pleasure Elite is V Blast - Vocals (Bondage Boys, Mace), Luvleggs – Guitar and Vocals (Malevolence, Mace, Hicky, Go Like Hell), Razor Monkey - Drums (Epiphany, Sons of Megalon), Elvis Christ - Lead Guitar (Go Like Hell, Triple Sixes),

The Pleasure Elite says they are submerged in writing and practicing new material and re-working older material for the upcoming shows. They point out that they are focusing on the Pleasure Elite of today and not trying to reinvent The Pleasure Elite of the past. The band members respect the history of the band and will attempt to please longtime fans while at the same time bringing in a new audience.

“People will focus on the past more so since those are their memories. I just hope we can do them justice over then next couple months.” Said Luvleggs.

Tell me about the Pleasure Elite album.
It will be called Arise Awake Destroy. The songs were already written and will be recorded in early November with Brian Valentino at 3 deuces studio in Pioneer Square. The album should be out in late 2007 or early 2008. We will be playing five or six shows for people to get a chance to hear them early. There may also be live recordings of the songs released first.

How would you personally describe the new Pleasure Elite songs. Have you nailed the precise sound you wanted for The Pleasure Elite in 2007?
It sounds to me like Motorhead meets Discharge and Metallica (kill em all era). I think we’ve nailed it pretty well. The tones are all there and the vibe is right.

How will the album be distributed to Pleasure Elite Fans?
It’s going to be released by the Domination Group and Sinister Records. A physical CD will be released and available through all our websites as well as the digital version. It will be available through all the main digital online providers as well as our web sites.

How has it been working with the current members of The Pleasure Elite and is it different now that you are all a little older?
Who’s calling us old? We added Chico from Flamethrower and Machine Gun on bass. He fits in perfectly with my “evil Lemmy will take over the world” scheme. Elvis came with me from Go Like Hell which is great because the new music we’re doing has more solos and is a bit more technical. Elvis brings along added vocals as well. We also brought in Brian from NME to sing a track and do backup vocals on some others, which has been a blast.

It’s been great, all these guys are pro and with the amount of time we’ve had to prepare it’s been amazing. The new songs are fleshed out, the old ones improved. The new performers are awesome as well and the stuff they’re coming up with is awesome. I can’t wait to see how it turns out personally.

What is the strangest or most unusual thing that ever happened at a Pleasure Elite show?
Nothing really seemed unusual to us. There was always something happening. From fire jugglers that couldn’t juggle fire to catching the back wall of the Fenix on fire. There was always something odd going on. One night we got a new fire breather who blew a gigantic ball of fire, it rolled all the way down the Under the Rail ceiling (which was no small feat) and had everyone in the back of the room ducking.

We also had our fair share of debauchery over the years. People hanging from rafters, sex in the crowd, and general nudity. I think it was the nights that nothing happened that seemed the most out of place with us.

What do you make of the Seattle Rock club scene in comparison to those days? A bit more conservative perhaps?
I think that there is less to surprise people with and that people have become more desensitized since we started. I like how the scene has gotten better again, except for the people who take themselves to damned seriously. I’m sorry but no band or person is that important in the overall scheme of things. On that note there are some really great bands out there not getting enough attention and some really mediocre bands getting too much.

Who are a few of your favorite local bands that you feel are not getting the amount coverage they deserve ?
Zero Down, Rabbit Junk, Atomic Outlaws, Nihilists, Midnight Idols, Dreadful Children and mostly someone should give Lonnie a hand job for all the work he puts into the scene that never gets appreciated. Lonnie is in Dreadful Children and is filling in for the Briefs right now on their European Tour. I’m sure I’m missing someone but those are the ones who come to mind.

How does the Pleasure Elite recapture its edge in 2007?
I think people will have to see for themselves. We tend to work with people who take things on the edge and make them their own musically. We have added people who know what they’re doing and these are definitely not new happy songs. The pace is more punk / speed metal without all the filler.

What is The Pleasure Elite looking to accomplish in upcoming months, and can it live up to its own legend?
My main focus on the band right now is enjoying the past as it was and enjoying the new music and people we’re working with. We’ve tbeen working pretty hard on the new stuff so the present is always more fun but I know people will focus on the past more so since those are their memories. I just hope we can do them justice over then next couple months.

The Halloween show at Hells Kitchen on October 27th seems to be the hot ticket right now. What can we expect at that show? Will new material be played, can we expect some special surprises, and how are the other bands on the bill?
We always have surprises and every show is like Halloween for us and our fans know it. Nothing is off limits, and I have only seen a couple of the bands so I’ll be as surprised as everyone else. We’ll be playing a lot of old stuff with a good smattering of new stuff as well.
