Crown Customs Extreme Hot Rod Work
written by Guitar Doug - photos by RJB

CROWN CUSTOMS gets into serious rebuilding and customizing of hot rods. They’re also great for all types of domestic and foreign repairs and have very quick turn around time. The hot rod customization generally takes a bit longer because that type of work can be painstaking and quite complicated.

Crown Customs is owned by Jason Horne and Tony Loveland and has been around for over two years. It’s located at 9001 Holman Road NW in Seattle, right across from the Crown Hill Shopping Center and Value Village .

Seattle photographer RJB, who is a huge custom hot rod fan, suggested I come along to his NW Pinups 4 Troops shoot at Crown Customs and was I ever glad I did. We had a great time getting an in-depth look at some of the extreme hot rod projects Jason and Tony are currently working on.

One of the coolest cars in the shop is the black 1948 Plymouth P-15 shown in the picture. The silver car pictured, by the way, is a 1939 Ford Deluxe sedan. The suspension, front end, rear end and motor on the P-15 are brand new and next summer this bad-boy will blow the doors off some serious hot rods on the road.

First, to give you an idea of what this car is about, check out the motor and imagine what it would be like to put the pedal to the metal. It’s a MAS Performance 460 hp Crate motor that has been upgraded to include aluminum cylinder heads and runs on 92 octane. Here are some other specifics on the motor.

Cubic inches: 383
Horsepower; 455 @ 5,000 rpm
Torque: 460 lb-ft @ 4, 800 rpm
Block: New GM four-bolt mains
Compression: 10:1
Crankshaft: Eagle SIR 5.7
Piston: SpeedPro hypereutectic flat-top
Rods: Eagle SIR 5.7
Camshaft: Comp Cams
Cylinder heads: Edelbrock: E-Tee 170
Intake manifold: Edelbrock Air Gap RPM
Demon four-Barrel
Carburetor: 750cfm
Ignition GM HEI

The modifications to the suspension are many. Jason and Tony installed a Fatman Fabrications Mustang II frame stub. To do this they had to cut off the entire frame just behind the front cross member, mock up the new stub into the correct locating position, and weld everything into place. Then they installed  an Art Morrison rear clip with a four bar set up and adjustable coil over, a Dutchman rear end housing, a 31 spline custom built third member, and stainless upper and lower control arms.

The brake system was also upgraded with 13 inch oversized rotors and an electric high power master cylinder, with an abs actuator.

Thanks Crown Customs for the tour and opening your shop to NW Pinups 4 Troops and RJB Photo. The troops in Iraq are going to love having the killer shots of the cars and the Pin Up models hanging in their barracks.
