months The Sinner has taken a new approach to working with the photographic community, publishing as many new photographers as possible. During this process we stumbled across one of Seattle’s most up and coming photographers, Dr. Steve. Most notably has been his work with Guitar Doug, designing shots for Doug’s Unmasked column as well as his ad for sales in The Sinner. These shots have been nothing less than cutting-edge and so geniusly simple that we were driven to feature him this month as our cover artist. You never know what to expect from an artist, they’re so individually unique and diversely talented. The Dr. is no exception. Steve has only been shooting on a semiprofessional scale for about a year and a half. The madness started one evening when he was asked by Shanghai Pearl to take some shots of her burlesque act at The Sea Monster Lounge in Wallingford. “That was that... before long, I was shooting most of the shows in Seattle.”
The Dr. admits that his work is “continually evolving” as most of his shots come from hanging out with friends, who just happen to be models, and seeing where things go. He’s says that he’s more of a “spur of the moment” shooter, starting with a basic idea and going with the flow of energy created during the shoot. While he aims for the perfect shot, he admits that many of his shots are “far from perfect.” While far from perfect some may be, many are outright genius and extremely creative.
For right now the Dr. is curious to see what paths his photography will lead him down. He says he’s just having fun, and not taking all this too seriously. Why should he? While the Dr. may live by night as a mysterious creature shooting beautiful women, by day he’s a mild-mannered chiropractor, cracking backs and snapping necks. He is fittingly called Dr. Steve, the chiropractor and photographer to Seattle’s amazing burlesque community. For once the name is more than ego, it’s a real title.
